Opportunity to learn--All clubs.
With Artists: Chris Hammack (Caricature), Jeff Phares (Native American/Human Bust) and Ed Haslett (Chip Carving)
Now, this is a perfect way to spend all that Christmas money you got from Santa! Or, to ask for an early birthday present! Take a class/learn a lot! As I get offers from teachers to teach classes in your area, I’m passing them on. If you know someone who teaches carving classes, let us know and we’ll list their information in the Log for clubs to contact them. Most teachers will work with the tools you have.
CHRIS HAMMACK—Caricature carver will be in California off and on from March-June Basswood blanks of your choice can be ordered/purchased on website, some avail at class. Any club wishing to have him teach a 1-2-day class in your area with your club. He charges $85 for 1day and $170 for 2days. You may come to one or both days. Ideally, he likes to keep the classes to 10-15 people. He brings a number of roughouts for you to purchase (ranging from $18-$25) and he circulates giving 1:1 attention to each student. You can see the examples of his roughouts on his website and/or order any from the site to work on in class. www.chrishammackart.com.
JEFF PHARES—Native American/Human form Bust carver will be in California off and on from March-June. Class size 8-10 people 3-day class $300 includes large Butternut blank.
ED HASLETT—Chip Carver lives in California. In the one-day class the carvers will learn how to transfer patterns onto a work piece, the correct techniques of chip carving, how to carve two-sided chips, three-sided chips, four-sided chips. They will also receive a lesson on finishing. In the two-day class they will review correct technique and learn how to carve a gothic leaf, chatter free curves and straight lines and they will carve four coasters. The price for the two-day class is $100. The classes will run from 9 am to 4pm with an hour for lunch. He will need at least five people in the class and no more than 12. What participants will need is themselves. He will supply the knives, transfer tools, lap boards, no slip mats, 5x12 practice boards and practice patterns and there will be a project of four 5x5 coasters. The students will keep the practice board and coasters. Supplies and books will be available for sale if the students so desire.

Hello, Carvers. I have started an e-mail group called California Carvers. This is a Yahoo! group I have added that is open to carvers throughout California. The site provides for group members to share their carving photos, links, information on carving. It allows for email contact between group members where if a question or comment is posted in the group it can be sent to all members of the group via email if they so choose. It is a great communication tool and provides fellowship between the carvers of California.
I will facilitate the group as owner and will draw on group members to act as moderators as the group grows. I think this will be a great tool for the CCG and look forward to your reply.
You can have a look at the California Carvers Group here, and sign up right now if you wish. You'll need to sign up with Yahoo! if you don't already have an account, but it's free and it's easy.
